Etapa 15: Hornillos to Castrojeriz

We started before sunrise again today. There was a thunderstorm last night and it had cleared when we left, but half an hour into walking it began to rain again. We covered out packs but didn’t bother with rain jackets – it was warm, and we would dry.

The first town wasn’t until 10km into the walk, so we were already at our halfway point for the day before stopping for breakfast. Before we left New Zealand, I mentioned tortilla española (Spanish potato omelette) to mum a few times as a tasty breakfast option, and she would look at me unimpressed at the thought of it. Since being here though, she has become a tortilla mega fan, and has a big slice of tortilla most mornings. So she had her usual today, while I had a chocolate croissant, which was delicious, but a bit sweet by the end of it.

The second half of the walk went smoothly – the rain clouds had disappeared, nothing was too steep, the views were nice. After a wee while we came across the ruins of an old convent, which were very pretty, and briefly after that we arrived in the town of Castrojeriz, where we are staying for the night. We arrived much earlier than we were expecting, just after 10:30am! We need to start leaving later, or maybe walking slower! Even once we had arrived in town though, it was another 15 minutes walk to get to our accommodation. We had a coke at the bar on the corner, ran into a Spanish couple we had met in Villamayor de Monjardin, and then just hung out by the albergue until it was opening time.

There’s another storm coming tonight, but hopefully that will mean we’ll have cooler weather for walking in the morning. We haven’t figured out where we’re going tomorrow yet, but I’m sure we’ll get there!
