At 5:30 this morning, mum told me I should be getting up. I grumbled about how we were in no rush – we had just 22km to walk and a booking at a hotel once we got there – but mustered up the energy to get myself moving as apparently she wanted to get moving. Half an hour later as we were about to head out the door she looked at her clock and said, “What! It’s only 6 o’clock!” Turns out she thought it was an hour later than it really was…
We got on the road though, and 2km later stopped for a quick coffee, running into all the usuals while there. This was followed by the only real hill of the day, a change in elevation of around 100m alongside a military area surrounded by barbed wire and “keep out” signs. From the top of this hill we could already see our destination for the day: Burgos. It looked so close! While walking, it very quickly did not feel so close.
We started our descent, and stopped for a second coffee and some breakfast at an albergue in a small town we passed through. Mum called home and had a wee chat, then once more we continued on out way.
The walk for the rest of the day wasn’t particularly exciting. We chose to take the alternate route into Burgos that led us along the river, rather than the outskirts of town, as it was said to be much more pleasant. It felt long though, and dragged a bit! The track turned into a proper path through a park at one point which took us reasonable close to the middle of Burgos, and after some time we crossed over the river into the city to find our hotel.
We’re staying two nights here, and taking a rest day tomorrow – our bodies need it! It’s very nice to have our own room and our own bathroom, as well as quiet and not needing to worry about disturbing others or having others disturb us. Hopefully it’s not too hard to get back into the walking on Tuesday!
