Last night, the CTLC teachers were invited to a performance at Window of the World, a theme park here in Shenzhen comprising of miniatures of the world’s most famous sights. It was put on to celebrate China’s new tourism law, and the launch of Shenzhen postcards. Yes, that’s right. This is a city of more than 10 million (some sources say 15 million) people has not, until now, produced postcards. I find this odd.
So the show started with a postcard ceremony, in which some of the important city officials sent some postcards, and all of the spectators were also given stamped postcards to send to people, so some lucky person reading this will receive one of Shenzhen’s first ever postcards! What excitement! Also, should you want a postcard, send me a message to my facebook or email or something and I’ll see if I can track down more than the one I already have :D
After that, the show “All The Way Sunny” began. It was a live stage performance that took us around the world, starting in Australia where we went for a boat ride on the Sydney Harbour before being taken over by kangaroos, which were people in intense kangaroo costumes and springs on their feet doing backflips and the like. A scary experience! We then made our way through Polynesia to New Zealand where some girls in bright yellow dresses and flower maracas danced to an interesting version of Pokarekare Ana, before making was for an upbeat musical rendition of the haka. We then headed to Europe where there were acrobats and contortionists in France, “flamenco” dancers in Spain, and some more dancing from an unknown location. Next was Asia, where there were more acrobats and contortionists, and a rather impressive string dance! There was some brief African dancing before moving on to the USA, which according to the Chinese mind is full of jazz and ballroom dancers, dancing on ice, rollerblade ice hockey, robots on segways, and girls dressed in skimpy Christmas outfits. This was followed by a parade including Halloween and Christmas floats, and then a Brazilian Carnaval finished off the show.
This was probably the most intense, mind blowing, hilarious, and delightful night of my life, and never shall it be bettered by anything. Click here to see the video I took of the Chinese rendition of the haka, I very much recommend you watch it. Otherwise, here are a few pics in the hopes you get even the tiniest idea of this magnificent evening :D
