Etapa 28: Trabadelo to O Cebreiro

We have reached Galicia! It’s a region in the north-west of Spain known for mountains, rain, and Celtic history. It’s one of Spain’s autonomous communities, it it has its own language which is similar to Portuguese but with significant influence from Celtic language roots. It’s also part of the country with a lot of superstition and mythology, and is sometimes known as “witch country” or “terra meiga” in Galician.

The day started reasonably flatish, but the last 8km or so were up a pretty steady, rather steep hill. The views were very pretty, but you had to remember to look up and see them – most of the time they’re glued to the ground in front of you trying to avoid tripping on a bit rock!

Once we arrived in O Cebreiro we came across a group of musicians playing the bagpipes and other traditional instruments, welcoming the pilgrims into town. We watched for a while and had a wee look in the souvenir stop before heading off to find our hostal. This wasn’t all that easy, considering they’ve ripped up the main street and it’s now full of rubble and diggers. We managed it eventually though, and after a lunch of Galician soup, we settled in for a quiet afternoon as it began to rain outside.

Tomorrow we go down the other side of out big climb from today – hopefully the calves survive another hard walk!

Love the musicians, great way to be kept busy and avoid domestic duties. The hats make me think back to Christchurch’s wizard.

Imagine a viaduct like that through the Kawarau Gorge!

Is the rock the buildings are made of schist?

Many of the buildings are schist, yes, but not all of them. And some are mixed stone types.

Ha ha, not an orange road cone in sight at the main street works! That would make a pleasant change! Do the musicians stand there playing all day, or do they just start playing when the see a pilgrim walker arrive into town?

They definitely weren’t playing continuously, maybe they had a certain timeframe for their performances? It was on and off throughout the afternoon.
