Etapa 21: Mansilla to León

With just 20km to walk to León, we thought we’d allow ourselves a wee sleep in and a late start to the day, but then we saw the forecast: 33°C. Not particularly wanting to be walking in that, we went back to our regular routine and left before sunrise.

The walk wasn’t bad, though a few hills began to reappear after our days of flat. The least fun bit was that a lot of the day seemed to be through the somewhat industrial outskirts of one town or another, before turning into a track along the side of the motorway before walking into León itself. We arrived early, around 10:30am, long before we could check in to our accommodation. Luckily we could drop our bags though, so we did so before going for a wee explore.

León is another town that seems to have been built around its cathedral. I went in for a visit, mum didn’t. It was much darker inside than the Burgos cathedral had been, and smaller, with fewer smaller rooms inside of it, but it had very elaborate stained glass windows that were very impressive. I had a nice wander around in there before heading out to meet up with mum again.

We then continued our walk through the city, stumbling across one of Antoni Gaudi’s few building outside of Catalonia, and then finding a wee restaurant to have some lunch. By then we could check in at the hostel, so we returned and spent the remainder of the afternoon in an attempt to hide from the heat. I’m not normally an audiobook sort of person – it’s not hands on enough for me – but I’ve gotten into them in the past week and am listening to a good story currently.

I believe León is the last proper city we pass through before reaching Santiago, so for the next couple of weeks now it’s just going to be towns. Fun!
