Thunderstorms began during the communal albergue dinner last night, and continued on through the night. This morning when we left the rain continued, but luckily the thunder and lightening were a wee way off into the distance. They didn’t really settle until around 10am, after which it was mostly dry until we reached Sansol.
Thanks to the rain, the ground was soft and muddy and very slippery – we’re lucky we didn’t fall, as there were a few close calls! The walk today was mostly flat though, which was appreciated, and the rain meant it was significantly cooler, which also was nice! Rainy days might become my new favourites.

After about 12km we stopped in Los Arcos for a second breakfast, which was most tasty. We also called ahead to the albergue in Sansol to ensure a bed for tonight so we could take our time with the second half of the walk.

Today’s exciting animals were frogs! They were tiny, the biggest of them would have only been 2cm long, and they were scurrying over the track between Los Arcos and Sansol. They were quite speedy and also ground-coloured, so it was tricky to get a photo, but I did my best! Then, just after we got into our albergue for the night, the thunder and lightening returned and it rained on and off for the afternoon.

Our albergue owner tonight seems to be a nice man, if a little eccentric. Everyone else staying here seems lovely, and we ate with them at our third communal dinner in a row (this is quickly becoming my favourite type of dinner!) We also stopped in at the pharmacy next door and showed the pharmacist mum’s toes – he was unimpressed. He sold her some antiseptic spray and a silicone toe cover and told her to go to the doctor if they get any worse.
Tomorrow has what looks to be some challenging hills, so hopefully my knees hold out and we arrive safely in Logroño – we’re considering a long walking day the next day, so we want to not be too broken!!
