I’m really bad at thinking of ways to start these things, so I’m just going to jump straight into it…
A few weeks ago quite a group of us made a weekend trip to Hong Kong for the Pride celebrations. Although it’s only about 30km away, it took forever to get there, so many people!! First the metro to to border crossing, which from my place is only about a 20 minute ride. Then going through Chinese immigration, which took approximately forever, walk across the river dividing the New Territories from the Chinese Mainland, and into another huge line of people at the Hong Kong immigration. Finally we got through, and hopped on the metro which took another hour or so to get into the city itself. We first stopped off at the hostel before going to have a quick look around the area and then down to Victoria Park for the pride parade. Walking around with the parade was cool, and nice to see a bit of Hong Kong, but it went for ages and we got a bit tired of it after a while so headed back to the hostel after a while for a wee relax before dinner. In the evening we had a bit of a walk around, saw some weird street performer who didn’t really do much at all, and did a little late night shopping haha. The next morning we pretty much just had breakfast and spend most of the morning trying to figure out how to get back to the border. I also found some Tim Tams and Gingernuts and Natural Confectionary snakes at an international store so got some yummies to bring back home. We ended up going to a different crossing back into China (there are quite a few), and the lines were so short! Only took about 10 min to get through, I was amazed! Anyways, we probably only had a total of about 24 hours in Hong Kong, but it looked awesome and I will definitely be going back!
This month’s other highlight would be climbing Mount Wutong yesterday, Shenzhen’s highest mountain at about 940m tall. It was…. exhausting. Round trip it took us about 7 hours, including rests along the way, and sitting at the top for a while waiting for the sunset, and then the sun to go down. After the climb a few of us went and had dinner together before going home, which was also super delicious. I’ll put in a few pics of the climb/views for you :)
Hmm what else has happened recently? One of the other foreign teachers fell the other day, and may end up having to go home to Canada because she injured her knee, which really sucks. I would be so angry if I did something like that to myself. The temperature is also getting a lot cooler! The daily high is still probably mid twenties, but its dropping below 20 at night time now, and the next few days are only forecast for 22 degrees, so I’m getting excited for winter! The temperature in Shenzhen hasn’t dropped below freezing since they started recording it, so I don’t imagine winter will be too bad, but it will be nice to wear a jumper from time to time! Hmm I’ll also give you a pic of a couple of the kids all dressed up for their cheerleading competition.
I think that’s all for now, and I should be getting on to planning this week’s lessons! I’m starting to run out of exciting things for them to be doing… Anyways, hi! and bye!
